Baby's First Winnie the Pooh Birthday Party Ideas

A.A. Milne's tales of the adventures of a "silly old" bear and his friends remains a beloved childhood classic with generations of parents continuing to introduce their children to the stories they once loved. The gentle bear and his wooded habitat lend themselves to an array of simple, themed games, decorations and foods suitable for 1-year-old children.

Invitations

The party invitation establishes the theme and builds anticipation for the event. Snap a picture of your child posing with her favourite Pooh stuffed animals. Create and print the cards yourself using a photo editing program like Adobe's Photoshop or visit a photo editing website like Shutterfly.com or Snapfish.com to make the invites. Wording examples include: "Deep in the Hundred Acres Wood where Winnie and his friends play, you'll find the enchanted neighbourhood, 110 S. Broadway St., where we'll celebrate Madison's first birthday! Join Winnie, Kanga, Roo, Rabbit, Piglet, Owl and Tigger and prepare to fill your rumbly tummy."

Decorations

Turn your house into the enchanted woods by adorning it with trees and using a nature-based colour palette of red, yellow, green, brown and purple. Blow up clear balloons with helium and float them to the ceiling to represent the sky. Paint a rainbow on a large piece of poster board and hang it on the wall. Cut trees from large sheets of brown and green construction paper and place them around the walls of the room. Make bees by printing and cutting out bee images, colouring them and taping them to the walls and trees. Cover the table with a yellow tablecloth and scatter Winnie the Pooh toys all over the table. Use red plates and utensils. Tie balloons to a large Winnie toy to create the centrepiece. Create a display area, if desired, for pictures of your baby's first year on a low table in the living room or dining area. Drape it with a yellow table covering and place various pictures of your baby on it. Place them in Winnie the Pooh picture frames if you can borrow or buy some.

Games

If you decide to play games with this age group, make sure you choose simple ones that very small children can do with a bit of parental assistance. Locate a large poster of Eeyore at the local party store or draw one of your own and hang it low on the wall. Cut pieces of grey flannel into tail shapes (one for each party guest) and place tape on the back of them. Ask guests to stick the tails where they think they belong. Let the children help make Tigger bounce by placing a small Tigger stuffed animal onto a blanket. Instruct children (and parents) to hold an edge of the blanket and throw Tigger into the air.

Food

Themed finger foods and a cake help make your 1 year old's party complete. Make your own "Beary Yummy" snack mix out of teddy grahams, mini-pretzels and gummy bears. Add a tray of cut-up fruit, "Rabbit's Garden" veggies and cheese cubes to appeal to toddler tastes. Order a Winnie the Pooh-themed cake from a local bakery or make a simple one by baking a sheet cake, frosting it yellow and adorning it with small Winnie the Pooh toys or cake-toppers (available at party or craft stores).
