Building ideas for a wooden stand for a swamp cooler

Swamp coolers, or evaporative coolers, are a low-impact alternative to air conditioners that are particularly effective in low humidity climates. Deciding on a design for your swamp cooler stand begins by determining the general wind direction and whether you are mounting on the window or the roof. Wooden stands are the construction of a shallow, well-drained box for the cooler to sit in and a support for that box.

The Box

Use pressure-treated wood for all swamp cooler mounts. Construct the basic mount-box -- for all the design ideas presented here -- with openings in the bottom, in order to allow ventilation and drainage. Nail four 2x4s, two foot side up, into a rectangle. Attach flat 2x4 across the bottom, with two inches between each board.

Ground Mount

A ground-mount is used to support a window-cooler. It is a simple construction of four legs, levelling your mount-box adjacent to the window. Cross-members will stabilise your legs. On hard surfaces, you can install a set of wheels for easy movement to clean the cooler.

Window Mount

A triangular window mount, similar to those used for standard air conditioners, is an easy solution for window mounting if a ground mount is not feasible. The mount-box rests with the interior edge against the window, and the sides atop two horizontal arms extending out from the window. The arms are supported by diagonal legs that brace against the side of the house.

Roof Mount

Roof-mounts will require roof work afterwards to ensure sealants and shingles are properly replaced once your roof-mount is installed. If you are not competent to repair your roof yourself, factor the cost of a roofer into the cost of your swamp cooler. A simple roof-mount design begins with a frame attached flat on the roof. The frame will differ from the dimensions of the mount-box because of pitch, so calculate accordingly. The mount-box will rest on the high horizontal board, and be propped up level with two legs that are anchored on the bottom horizontal board. The mount-box will extend level over the dropping roof, and be held aloft with two legs.
