A calorie is a unit of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of water 1 degree Celsius at a specified temperature. Calories

Calories come from the foods that you consume. This includes carbohydrates, fats and proteins. These nutrients have different caloric values. According to the book, “Perfect Calorie Counting: All You Need to Know About”, while most carbohydrates and proteins have only 4 calories per gram, fats typically contain 9 calories per gram. By consuming proteins, carbohydrates and fats in the right proportion, you will provide your body with the nutritional components required for your essential bodily functions. On the other hand, when you exceed the caloric requirements of your body, you will begin to store the excess calories in the form of fat. The book further states that it takes approximately 3,500 calories to store one pound of fat in your body.

Bad or empty calories

Empty or bad calories come from foods without any nutritional value. For example, processed foods and drinks typically contain high amounts of empty calories that come from fats and simple sugars. These foods provide very little nutritional value, and your body turns the excess calories from these foods into fat. Your body does, however, require some sugars and fats that have good nutritional value. Empty calories come from saturated and trans fats and refined sugars. Eliminating products that contain these fats and sugars from your diet can reduce your caloric intake substantially.

Metabolism and weight

Metabolism is the process that converts the food you eat into energy. Metabolism is a natural process that adapts to your body’s needs. Your body automatically regulates how it processes energy according to your available food sources. If you consume a low-calorie diet, your metabolism will slow down to meet the demands of the energy source available. Your basal metabolic rate is the number of calories your body requires to function properly while at rest. Your age, sex, size and composition influence your BMR.

Calorie restriction diets

In addition to supporting weight loss, calorie restriction diets may also help to prevent aging. According to a study that appeared in the May 2006 issue of the “Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism”, low-calorie diets that still provide you with your required nutrients may support thyroid function and help to prevent the aging of your cells. To adapt to a calorie restriction diet, you should gradually decrease your caloric intake so your body can adjust. As with all diets, you should consult your doctor before starting a calorie restriction diet.
