To show support to those living with cancer, who have died from cancer—or a cancer-related illness—and to support the further research and treatments of the disease, many people wear awareness ribbons. Different cancers are represented through different coloured ribbons and are mostly worn on the lapel of a shirt, jacket or coat.

Black, Blue and Gray

Black, blue and grey colours all symbolise support against specific cancers. A simple black ribbon represents melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer. A blue ribbon is worn to represent colon cancer, and a grey ribbon represents both brain cancer and brain tumours.

Pink and Purple

Perhaps the most well-known ribbon next to the red ribbon representing AIDS/HIV is the pink ribbon. Pink ribbons show support for women who have been diagnosed with, have overcome or in memory of someone who died from breast cancer. The purple ribbon represents all cancer survivors, as well as the fight against pancreatic cancer and leiomyosarcoma.

Pink, Purple and Teal Combinations

A teal ribbon alone shows support for women suffering from, in remission or who have died from ovarian cancer. Teal combined with pink and purple also show support for different kinds of cancer. A teal and pink combination ribbon represents support for women who have gynaecological cancer or hereditary breast cancer. Purple, pink and teal ribbons show support for people with thyroid cancer.

Gold, Orange and Yellow

Gold ribbons represent all children who suffer from any kind of cancer, as well as support for a cure. Orange ribbons are worn in support of those fighting or who have lost their fight to leukaemia. A simple yellow ribbon is worn to represent liver disease and cancer, as well as testicular and bladder cancer.

Burgundy and White

A burgundy and white combination ribbon represents anyone suffering from any kind of hand and neck cancer. A simple white ribbon is worn to support those suffering from bone disease and cancer, as well as lung cancer.
