Car Radio Installation Instructions

To install a radio in the car, you first need to remove the original radio from the car--unless the original radio was stolen or otherwise removed previously. You can install an aftermarket radio in any car either to replace a stolen one or to change the stock model with a higher-quality one. This is a matter of making sure the new radio fits within the dashboard and connecting the wires correctly.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Trim stickWrenchScrewdriverWire cutting/crimping toolCrimping capsSolder spoolSoldering ironHeat shrink wrapHeat gun

Instructions

1 Disconnect the battery within your car's engine compartment. Loosen the clamp nut on the black battery cable with a wrench (this is the negative cable) and remove the cable from the battery terminal, setting it as far away as possible.

2 Pry off the trim panels on your car's dashboard that secure the radio unit. This will vary depending on the car, but it likely includes a faceplate surrounding the radio that you either pull off or pry off with a trim stick.

3 Remove the fasteners for the radio; these can be small bolts requiring a wrench or screws needing a screwdriver. Some models--mainly Ford ones--require special U-shaped tools you must insert into holes to detach the unit's clips.

4 Pull the radio out of its mount in the dashboard and disconnect the wires in the back. This will include electrical connectors for the battery and speakers, a ground wire and the lead for the antenna.

5 Connect the wires to your new radio unit. If the car's electrical connector fits the new unit or if the radio comes with an adaptor, use it to connect the radio. Otherwise, you'll have to crimp or solder the wires together.

6 Mount the radio and its mounting bracket into the dashboard and apply the mounting fasteners.

7 Reinstall the trim panels on the dashboard.

8 Reconnect the car's battery cable.

1 Clip the wires from the car's electrical connector using wire cutters.

2 Strip a half to a full inch off of the wire insulation on both the wires in the car and on the new radio's electrical connector, leaving bare leads on the wires.

3 Connect the bare leads of each wire to its colour-coordinated twin. If you are crimping the wires, place the leads so they point in the same direction and twist them together. For soldering, point them toward one another and place the solder on the wires.

4 Insert the crimping cap onto the twisted wire leads and tighten the cap using your wire crimping tool.

5 Heat the wire with a soldering iron for soldering, making sure the solder doesn't touch the iron itself. After soldering, slip shrink wrap tubing over the bare wires and contract the tubing with a heat gun.
