Carnival Booth Games

Some people associate carnival booth games with their childhood and simpler times. These types of games are a combination of skill and luck, and they often go hand-in-hand with candyfloss and popcorn. If you are planning an outdoor event, such as a children’s birthday party, family reunion or corporate event, there are many types of carnival booth games you can easily create yourself.

Ring Toss Game

The ring toss is one of the quintessential games found at most carnivals and outdoor fairs. Many unethical carnies have a reputation for using items that have larger diameters than the actual thrown rings, but your backyard carnival can be honest. Simply use rings, such as diving rings used in swimming pools, and line up rows of soda bottles. Instruct game participants to try tossing the ring around the neck of the bottle from a set throwing distance. If a ring lands around the bottle, the participant gets a prize.

Balloon and Darts Game

You only need regular blown up balloons, a thin sheet of plywood, darts and tacks to play the Balloon and Darts Game, according to Fun Attic. Blow up 10 to 20 balloons by mouth and attach them to the plywood with tacks. Place the plywood up against a wall and away from the other games. Mark off a throwing line at least 10 feet away from the plywood. Give participants three chances to throw a dart at the board and pop a balloon. If the participant pops at least two balloons, he wins a prize.

Knock-Over Games

Knock-over games allow participants to show off their aiming skills. You can use many different types of items for these kinds of games. For example, you can line up a row of wooden-shaped milk bottles and give the participants baseballs to throw at them. You can also use stacked tin cans and give the participants beanbags to throw at them. Choose items and throwing distances that will fit the skill sets of your crowd. For example, if you are planning a party for kindergartners, they can throw light beanbags at an easily knocked over target 5 feet away.

Luck or Chance Games

Carnival chance games do not rely on athletic abilities or skills. They are based purely on luck and can be fun for younger children. An example of this type of game is the fishing game. For this game, all you need is a sheet of plywood with a hole cut out in it, as well as a bamboo stick with a string attached to it. Attach a wooden clothespin to the end of the string. You can paint the plywood to make it resemble water or an underwater scene with fish if you like. The game is played with the participant extending the bamboo “fishing rod” through the hole. An adult is sitting on the other side of the plywood. The adult attaches a prize to the clothespin at the end of the string. Another luck game is to fill up a plastic kiddie pool with water and place dozens of yellow rubber ducks in it. Write different prize names on the bottom of the ducks with permanent marker. Participants simply choose a duck and read the bottom of it to see what they have won.
