When entering and leaving Greece all travellers are required to pass through customs whether they are entering via road, air, train or sea. As a member of the European Union, many of Greece's customs rules and regulations were created by the governing body of Europe and are standardised across the continent's members states.

Greece

Greece is situated in the south eastern region of Europe and is often seen as bridging the gap between Europe and Asia for travellers to the region, according to the European Union. As one of the oldest civilisations in history, Greece is a popular tourist destination for people from all over the world. As an area of great historic interest, all historic items must be allowed to leave the country by the Archaeological Service. Any item bought in Greece dating from 1830 or before to be removed from the country must be sold with an export licence provided by the seller, Frommer's reports.

Alcohol

Greece allows unlimited movement of goods into and out of the country for personal use; although this works in theory, customs officials will seize large amounts of alcohol or tobacco moved into and out of the country for commercial use. For members of EU states, Greek customs officials will generally allow up to 10 litres of spirits over 22 percent alcoholic volume and 20 litres of spirits under 22 percent volume; 90 litres of wine can also cross the border along with up to 110 litres of beer, Visa HQ reports. Non-EU citizens are limited to one litre of 22 percent and above spirits and three litres of lower than 22 percent volume spirits; four litres of wine can also cross the border and 16 litres of beer for non-EU citizens.

Tobacco

As with alcohol the Greek customs rules are less strict for UK and EU nationals who are allowed to cross the Greek border with up to 800 cigarettes, 400 cigarillos, 200 cigars and up to one kilogram of tobacco, Visa HQ reports. For non-EU citizens the amount of tobacco that can be moved into and out of Greece is limited compared to UK and EU citizens. Travellers from outside the European Union can cross the border with 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars or 50 grams of tobacco.

Restrictions

As part of the Washington Convention covering products made from protected species, Greece does not allow products made from certain raw materials -- such as ivory -- to pass into the country. Meat and milk products are also prohibited unless they are brought in small quantities from certain countries, including Croatia and Greenland, Visa HQ reports. Animals are allowed to enter Greece as long as they have the necessary vaccinations and identification. Weapons of all sorts are prohibited unless they are hunting weapons moved with special permission by the government of Greece, Frommer's reports.
