Describe the Correct Method to Transport Microscopes

There are two main things to consider when transporting a microscope: the distance the microscope needs to be transported and the type of microscope. If you are transporting a compound microscope across the lab, that can be solved rather easily with proper caution and care. However, if the microscope is a measuring microscope, such as a Leitz, Nikon, Olympus or Mitutoyo, it must be handled only by trained personnel. Keep the container that your microscope came in when it was shipped or purchased. It will be a helpful tool that you can use when transporting it again.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Bubble wrapSmall plastic zip-close bagsLarge plastic zip-close bagsClear tapeStyrofoam packing "peanuts"Packing tapePermanent markerBox four times the size of the microscope

Instructions

1

Describe the Correct Method to Transport Microscopes

Pick up the microscope carefully by placing your hand on the microscope's arm. You will transport the microscope by hand when you are moving it short distances, such as across a lab or a classroom.

2 Place your other hand beneath the base (or bottom) of the microscope. Secure both hands before you begin walking toward the microscope's destination. Hold the microscope out in front of your body while both hands are gripping it tightly. You do not want to swing the microscope to your side while carrying it or let it drop from the upright position.

3 Walk carefully with smooth motions to avoid jarring or damaging the microscope.

4 Set the microscope down gently when you reach the microscope's destination.

1

Describe the Correct Method to Transport Microscopes

Disassemble the microscope into sub-assembly parts. Separate the lenses and other smaller pieces from the base and the arm.

2 Wrap the small microscope parts separately in bubble wrap. Tape the bubble wrap closed. Place the pieces individually in their own zip-closed plastic bag. Label each bag with the permanent marker, according to the part that is inside.

3 Wrap the main microscope arm and base piece in bubble wrap. Tape it closed and slide it into a large zip-closed bag. Label the bag with a permanent marker.

4 Number the microscope #1 of however many bags you have. Label another bag #2 of the number of bags you have (for example: #1 of 7; #2 of 7). Continue until you have all of the bags numbered accordingly. This is done so that when the receiver retrieves the bags from the box, none of the smaller bags will get left within the styrofoam packing.

5 Fill the box four inches deep with packing "peanuts."

6 Place the microscope and the smaller parts into the centre of the box carefully. Do not allow the microscope sections to touch the edges of the box.

7 Fill the remaining space in the box with packing styrofoam pieces, pouring in as many as you can fit into the box. Pack them down tight so that the microscope cannot bounce around or move.

8 Seal the box closed with a high-quality packing tape. Label the box "FRAGILE" with a permanent marker and write "THIS SIDE UP" on the box. Send the microscope priority or overnight mail to keep it from being shipped and tossed about as much as possible. Purchase insurance for the replacement cost of your microscope and delivery confirmation for your protection.

Tips and warnings

The "foam-in" box shipping is recommended and should be used with speciality microscopes. This can be accomplished with commercial box packagers. If you have a speciality microscope, contact a commercial shipper before disassembling or packaging your microscope.

Microscopes with large stages may need the stage to be removed or locked in place before it can be transported. Contact the manufacturer of your particular microscope before disassembling and transporting that microscope.
