Differences Between Laser & Inkjet Paper

Inkjet and laser printers perform the same job in different ways. Inkjet printers apply ink on top of the paper while laser printers use a fuser to bond ink to the paper. Laser printers are capable of printing faster, producing better-quality photos and do not often require toner replacements. Inkjets carry a much lower initial cost. Additionally, there are several important differences between laser and inkjet papers.

Paper Weight

Paper is available in various weights or thickness. Inkjet printers function best with 20-weight paper. Laser printers are able to accommodate many different weights of paper including thicker card stock.

Toner Fusion

Laser printers fuse toner to the page they print. If inkjet paper is used instead, the toner may not fuse and could run or smear.

Ability to Withstand Heat

The fuser in a laser printer uses heat to fuse the toner to the paper. Glossy inkjet paper may not be able to withstand that heat and could melt. Speciality glossy paper is made for laser printers.
