DIY Bedside Table

Not only do do-it-yourself projects save you money, but they give you the the satisfaction of building something for your home. A DIY bedside table is a practical project for a beginning or experienced woodworker. Bedside tables are a convenient place to set a lamp, alarm clock, glasses, keys and anything else that might be left in your pockets at the end of the day. A bedside table can be made with a few supplies and tools right in your home, workshop or garage.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

1-by-3-by-18 hardwood boards, 8Mitre sawWood glueBar clampsDamp rag3/4-by-18-by-18-inch hardwood plywood panel, 12 1/2-inch flush trim wood screwsScrew gun2-by-2-by-26-inch hardwood boards, 4Fine-grit sandpaperWood finish of your choicePaint brush

Instructions

1 Cut a 45-degree angle on both ends of each of the eight 1-by-3-by-18 hardwood boards using a mitre saw. The angles should be opposite each other on the three-inch side of each board so that the boards can no longer stand on the narrowest, smallest edge straight up. These will come together to form the two support frames around the legs in the form two boxes. The angles when they come together will form the right angles on the inside corners of the support frames.

2 Place four of the 1-by-3-by-18 hardwood boards together to form a box. Place the remaining four together to form a second box.

3 Apply a bead of wood glue to the joints where the boards come together to form the boxes. Clamp the box assemblies together with bar clamps. Wipe off any excess glue with a damp rag. Allow the glue to dry. Remove the bar clamps.

4 Align the 3/4-by-18-by-18-inch hardwood plywood panel on top of one box assembly. Apply a bead of wood glue around the joint where the panel meets the box assembly edges. Fasten the panel to the assembly by driving flush trim wood screws through the panel into the box sides. Space the screws every three inches. Wipe off any excess glue with a damp rag. This is the top of the bedside table.

5 Place the top of the stand with the panel side down on a work surface. Place one 2-by-2-by-26-inch hardwood board in each corner of the assembly so that it sits against the panel and the box sides. These are the legs of the stand. Fasten the legs to the sides of the top by driving two flush trim wood screws through each side of the leg into the sides of the top assembly.

6 Slide the second box assembly over the legs. Position the assembly approximately 12 inches from the bottom of the legs. Fasten the assembly to the legs by driving flush trim screws through the assembly into the legs. Use one screw on each side of the legs. This will provide support for the legs.

7 Sand the entire stand with fine-grit sandpaper. Apply a wood finish of your choice with a paint brush. Allow the finish to dry prior to use.

Tips and warnings

Apply a finish to match your existing bedroom furniture.
