DIY: How to Unclog Kitchen Drains

Sprinkle 1 cup baking soda into the clogged kitchen drain. Follow it with 1 cup table salt.

2 Warm 1 cup white vinegar in a cooking pot until hot but not boiling. Pour the hot vinegar into the drain. The combination of baking soda, salt and vinegar will foam; this is safe and natural and helps break down clog-causing particles in the drain.

3 Allow the baking soda, salt and vinegar mixture to remain in the drain for 15 minutes. Run hot water for 30 seconds to wash away the drain cleaning mixture and remove the clog.

4 Boil water in the cooking pot if the drain is emptying slowly. Remove the remaining clog by pouring the boiling water down the drain.

Tips and warnings

Undiluted lemon juice keeps your drain fresh and washes away clog-causing grease and soap scum. Use lemon juice once every week or two to maintain a clog-free drain.

Follow this treatment by plunging the sink with a plunger if the clog is severe. Cover overflow holes with old towels and plunge for a few minutes to force the clog through the pipe.
