Stone veneers at a touch of earthiness and rustic charm to fireplace surrounds. Stone veneers create the look of full-size stone without the difficult installation. While full-size stone requires three-dimensional size and weight considerations, veneers only require the installer to consider two-dimensional spacing. Veneers provide a facade but cannot bear weight. Therefore, take care when installing stone veneer at the base of a fireplace. Place only fireplace tools and logs at a veneered fireplace base, and avoid standing on the thin stone.

Instructions

1 Cover the area surrounding the fireplace with builder's felt and staple it into place. Allow at least 2 inches of overlap between felt pieces.

2 Nail metal lath to the fireplace surround securely on wall studs.

3 Mix mortar with water according to the manufacturer's instructions, and apply a 1/2-inch coat on the lath. Scrape the mortar with a notched trowel to create parallel furrows. Allow it to set overnight.

4 Mix a new batch of mortar. Wet the back of a piece of stone veneer with a damp sponge and spread a 1/4-inch layer of mortar with the smooth side of the trowel, like spreading butter on toast. Apply the stone to the top corner of the fireplace surround, press and wiggle into place. Hold it in place for a few seconds.

5 Repeat stone application outwards, leaving 1/8 inch between each piece of stone. Cut edge stones to size with a circular saw equipped with a masonry blade.

6 Clean excess mortar off the stone surfaces and spaces between stones with a wire brush. Allow the mortar to set overnight.

7 Mix a third batch of mortar and force it into the spaces between the stones with a rubber grout float. Gently clean mortar off the stone surfaces with a warm, damp sponge. Allow the mortar to set for one week prior to using the fireplace.

Tips and warnings

Apply sealer to the stone after allowing it to set for one month to make for easier maintenance and cleaning.
