DIY Kayak Rudder

Kayaks can be used in for all sorts of water sports, ranging from white-water adventure to simply rowing in a tranquil lake. Kayaks are typically steered using rowing oars on either side of the boat. Adding a rudder to a kayak allows it to turn more quickly by positioning itself in the water to create water resistance. This much quicker method of directional control allows the oars to be used purely for forward motion and therefore makes the entire boat quicker.

Things you need

Sheet of aluminiumJigsawStainless steel progressor tooth jigsaw bladeDrill gunDrill bitScrewdriver bit4 Screws4 Screw bolts1 9 inch nut1 9 inch boltCrescent wrenchMarkerTape measure1"x1/4" metal bracketMetal fileHammerSafety googlesHardware gloves

Instructions

1 Draw your rudder shape on a sheet of aluminium using your tape measure and your marker . Measure it out to dimensions of 17 inches in length and six inches in height. You are going to cut this out of aluminium sheeting, which is usually just less than an inch in width. Aluminium sheet metal is just strong enough to hold up to the elements, while not being too strong to cut with your jigsaw.

2 Attach your progressor tooth blade to your jigsaw and cut out the shape you just drew from your aluminium sheet using the saw. The progressor tooth blade for this will allow you to easily cut through the aluminium sheeting. Once the shape has been cut you will have the basic design. Use your metal file to file down the rougher edges and you will have created your rudder.

3 Hammer your bracket so that it twists where it begins to bend. This will allow you to mount it to the kayak and then mount your rudder to it. Drill a hole into the bracket and then drill a hole into the kayak where you would like to place your rudder. Place your nut through the hole on the top of the bracket then through the hole that you made in the rear end of the kayak. Place the nut on the bottom end and screw it up to the bracket using your hands. You don't want it too tight as you want to be able to move the bracket back and forth by hand.

4 Place your rudder on the downward bent piece of your bracket and place at least four screws in it, screwing the rudder to the bracket.

5 Place a bolt on each one of the screws, attaching the rudder to the bracket, and tighten them using the crescent wrench as tightly as you can. You can now move your rudder back and forth by hand and have greater control over your kayak.

Tips and warnings

Always use safety goggles and gloves when working with and cutting metal, as it has a tendency to spark when being cut and can be very sharp. Goggles will protect you from potential hazard to your eyes while your gloves will prevent you from being cut by sharp metal edges.
