DIY umbrella base

Patio umbrella bases hold the umbrella steady in one area to prevent it from blowing over in high winds. Umbrella bases are generally weighted with either water in them or sand so they do not move. Using just a few items, you can make a decorative and sturdy umbrella base that is much less expensive than buying one at a store.

Things you need

Duct tapeLarge plant potReady-to-mix concreteWaterPlastic panTrowelMeasuring tapePVC pipeHacksawPotting soilPlants

Instructions

1 Place a large plant pot in the area where you want the umbrella base. Place duct tape over the holes on the pot bottom if it has drainage holes.

2 Stand a piece of PVC pipe in the centre of the pot. Add 10 inches above the height of the pot, and cut it to this length with a hacksaw.

3 Pour ready-to-mix concrete powder in a plastic pan. Add water in small increments and mix thoroughly with a trowel. Add enough water to achieve a very thick mixture.

4 Hold the PVC pipe in the centre of the pot with one hand. Scoop the mixture out of the pan with the other hand and into the large pot to fill it about halfway. Smooth the mixture so it is level in the pot. Let the concrete harden for about two hours.

5 Pour potting soil in the pot to fill it completely to the top. Insert shade-loving greenery or flowers in the soil.

6 Slide the umbrella pole into the PVC pipe.

Tips and warnings

Instead of planting flowers or plants in the soil, you can put decorative aquarium rocks or marbles in the top of the pot or any coloured heavy material.

Choose a diameter of PVC pipe that will hold the umbrella steady and not allow motion in the stand in high winds.
