DIY Umbrella Bracket

Most photographers want to improve their images, but not many want to break the bank on lighting equipment. The cost of light-umbrella mounting brackets can add up quickly. Luckily, mounting brackets are easy to make with household items. In a few steps, you can create your own umbrella bracket to hold one or two off-camera flashes.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

Marker50-by-1/2-inch plastic tubeDrill kit7/32-inch drill bitFour 1/4-inch screwsT-brace with five 1/4-inch holes2-1/4-inch washers2 remote flash receivers or light-stand-to-hot-shoe-adaptors with 1/4-inch female threadTripod or light stand with 1/4-inch mounting thread1/4-inch wing nut

Instructions

1 Draw two marks on the plastic tube that match the two holes on the long side of the T-brace. Drill two holes on the marks with a 7/32-inch bit.

2 Place the plastic tube over the long side of the T-brace so that its holes align with those on the plastic tube. Screw one of the 1/4 inch screws through the T-brace all the way into the plastic pipe. Screw another 1/4-inch screw into the other hole just enough for the plastic tube to be securely attached to the bracket.

3 Insert 1/4-inch screws into the two outer holes on the short side of the T-brace. Make sure the screw threads are coming out of the T-brace on the same side that the plastic tube is mounted.

4 Lay two washers over each of the screw threads on the short side of the T-brace. Attach the hot-shoe-to-light-stand adaptors, or remote receivers, to the screw threads. Ensure they are aligned so that a mounted flash will face the long side of the T-brace with the plastic tube.

5 Mount the T-brace on a light stand or tripod using the open 1/4-inch hole in the middle of the T-bracket. Secure the umbrella bracket with a wing nut.

6 Insert the umbrella stem into the plastic tube. Secure the umbrella to the bracket by tightening the loose screw on the plastic tube.
