Duties & responsibilities of fitness personal trainer

Personal Trainers work in fitness clubs, hospitals, civic and community centres and schools one on one with clients, in small client groups or in larger fitness classes, focusing on muscular strength, endurance, body composition, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. Some trainers work with clients in the client's home or at private training facilities. They are certified by one of several organisations. Qualifications include a high school diploma, certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED).

Fitness Evaluation

The duties of a personal trainer are straight forward. They begin with a fitness evaluation of the client. The evaluation helps the trainer learn the level of muscular strength and endurance of the client in order to design a fitness program.

Choosing Goals

Based on the client's level of physical fitness, the trainer will choose the exercises and activities for the client. The trainer also sets the goals for the client. The goals are based on the client's age and fitness level to avoid injury and in a group class environment, the trainer presents the goals for the class as a whole.

Performing Exercises

The trainer demonstrates all the exercises within the client's fitness regimen so the client can adequately perform the exercises without risk of injury.

Providing Assistance

Personal trainers assist or "spot" a client while the client exercises to help the client get through the regimen and avoid injury.

Recording Activities

Personal trainers record their clients' activities, then review and adjust the fitness regiment and goals as needed. Once goals are met, a trainer will set the next set of goals and create a new regimen.
