Epifanes clear varnish application directions

Among wooden boat and yacht owners, Epifanes Clear Varnish is widely considered the gold standard for protective and appearance-enhancing varnish. It provides the longest usable life of any available marine varnish. Epifanes Clear Varnish is a single-component coating and requires only thinning before application of undercoats. Made with tung oil and urethane resins, Epifanes also contains a superior grade of ultraviolet filters. Yearly unthinned top-up coats keep UV protectants fresh and protect the wood from degrading effects of sunlight.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

Natural bristle paint brushSandpaper ranging from 60- to 400-gritClean rags

Instructions

General Preparation

1 Make sure the surface is clean, dry and degreased. If necessary, use Epifanes Paint And Varnish Thinner or denatured alcohol on a cloth to remove grease.

2 Sand bare wood with 60- to 80-grit dry sandpaper, following the grain of the wood. Finish sanding with a 100-to 120-grit dry sandpaper.

3 Stain the wood at this point, if desired, with quality oil- or water-based stain.

First Coat

1 Hand sand the wood after staining with 220-grit dry sandpaper. Do not use a power sander.

2 Thin the appropriate quantity of Epifanes Clear Varnish to a two-to-one ratio with Epifanes Paint And Varnish thinner.

3 Use a clean, natural bristle brush to apply the varnish. For large, flat areas, a roller may be used.

4 Allow the first coat to dry for 24 hours.

Second Coat

1 Hand sand the dried first coat with 280-grit dry sandpaper.

2 Thin an appropriate quantity of Epifanes Clear Varnish to a ratio of four-to-one with Epifanes Paint And Varnish thinner.

3 Use a clean, natural bristle brush to apply the varnish. For large flat areas, a roller may be used.

4 Allow the second coat to dry for 24 hours.

Third Coat

1 Hand sand the dried second coat with 320-grit dry sandpaper.

2 Thin an appropriate quantity of Epifanes Clear Varnish to a ratio of six-to-one with Epifanes Paint And Varnish thinner.

3 Use a clean, natural bristle brush to apply the varnish. For large flat areas, a roller may be used.

4 Allow the third coat to dry for at least 24 hours.

Subsequent Coats

1 Apply a minimum of 4 more coats. Thin the next coat of Epifanes Clear Varnish to a ratio of 20-to-one with Epifanes Paint And Varnish Thinner and further decrease the amount of thinner with each subsequent coat. Do not thin the final two coats.

2 Sand between coats with 320- to 400-grit dry sandpaper.

3 Apply a total of 12 to 14 coats if you are applying an initial basecoat of varnish.

4 Maintain the surface by annual application of one or two coats of unthinned Epifanes Clear Varnish to clean, degreased existing varnish which has been lightly sanded.
