Feather Picking in African Gray Parrots

The African grey parrot is very intelligent and requires a patient and committed owner. Their talking ability is great. One famous African grey, Alex, showed that African greys could associate words with meanings. Feather picking is a destructive behavioural habit where African greys methodically pull out or damage their feathers.

Boredom

Because of the African greys' intelligence, these birds can become bored quickly due to inactivity, solitary living and the absence of a mate and resort to feather picking.

Dietary Imbalances

Dietary imbalances can lead to feather picking. African greys often have calcium deficiencies. Grinding up egg shells and mixing that with their daily food can increase calcium consumption.

Environmental Problems

If the African grey is around cigarette smoke or in a household where the air is too dry, this could lead to feather picking. African Grays should get regular baths and be exposed to moist air.

Fear and Stress

If the African grey is fearful or stressed by its living conditions, such as a noisy home or the presence of other pets, it could start feather picking.

Incorrect Socialization

If the African grey was not raised properly by the breeder, it can become neurotic and start feather picking.
