Incandescent

Incandescent light bulbs are the more familiar, popular way of lighting an area. They function by burning a filament inside the bulb. The filament becomes white-hot, illuminating the area.

Fluorescent

Fluorescent light bulbs are the more energy-efficient counterparts of incandescent bulbs. Fluorescents are filled with mercury and coated in phosphor. The phosphor gives off light when it becomes excited.

Color and Shape

Incandescent light bulbs produce a yellowish-white light, while fluorescent bulbs produce full-spectrum light. This light can appear unnatural and even green or bluish to the human eye. Fluorescent light bulbs come in various shapes, such as tubes and spirals, while incandescent bulbs do not.

Brightness

Fluorescent light bulbs can produce the same amount of light as incandescent bulbs while using a fraction of the energy. A 60-watt fluorescent light bulb would be much brighter than a 60-watt incandescent bulb.

Price

Fluorescent light bulbs can cost about three times more than incandescent bulbs. But fluorescent bulbs generally last much longer than incandescent ones.
