Topiary is an age old art of carving live trees into various shapes and sculptures in the landscapes. The most commonly used trees for topiaries include small shrubs and small evergreen trees with small foliage or needles. Hardy shrubs and trees with a dense, thick growth that stand up well to severe pruning are most well suited for creating topiaries. Geometrical shapes are among the most commonly created topiary forms.

Dwarf Alberta Spruce

Dwarf Alberta spruce (Picea glauca 'Conica') is among the popularly used trees for creating fresh, live topiaries with its mature height of up to 8 feet and a 4 to 5 feet spread. The tree has dense growing, dark green, soft needles that keep their colour throughout the year. Dwarf Alberta spruce grows very slowly, requiring infrequent pruning to keep the topiary in shape. Hardy in USDA Zones 2 to 8, the tree grows well in areas of full sun to partial shade. Water regularly and every week during hot weather. Dwarf Alberta spruce is a native tree of the United States and is deer resistant.

Dwarf Brush Cherry

Dwarf brush cherry (Eugenia myrtifolia 'Globulus') is an evergreen plant hardy in USDA Zones 9 to 11. The slow growth of the plant and mature height of 4 to 6 feet makes it a popular choice for creating topiaries. Dwarf brush cherry has a very compact form and produces bronze shaded, red foliage all through the year. The white flowers bloom in spring followed by purple, edible fruit. Dwarf brush cherry is also used in landscapes as a hedge and border plant and grows best in areas of full sun to partial shade.

French Blue Scotch Pine

French blue scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris 'French Blue') is a an evergreen conifer with blue green needles. The tree is well suited for creating topiaries with its uniform and compact growth habit and moderate growth speed. French blue scotch pine achieves a full height of up to 60 feet with a 20 to 25 feet spread and grows well in full sun locations. Hardy in USDA Zones 2 to 7, the tree is also used an accent and specimen planting in landscapes. The deer resistant tree does not produce any flowers.
