Getting Surround Sound to Work From TV

Surround sound is a multichannel audio process using five or more speakers to create a feeling of movement and space in a room, typically for a home theatre. Surround sound requires a connection from the TV to an audio-video receiver hooked up to a speaker package. The AV receiver decodes the audio signals for distribution to the speakers.

Audio cablesAV receiverSpeaker wireWire strippersSpeakersAV cablesSource signal, such as cable or satellite receiver box

Instructions

1 Connect the TV to the AV receiver using the audio cables. Match the colour on each cable plug to the jack on the back of the TV's Audio OUT jacks and the receiver's TV Audio IN jacks.

2 Hook up the TV to the cable or satellite receiver box using a set of AV cables. Match the plug colours to the colours on the AV OUT jack on the cable or satellite receiver and the AV IN jack on the TV.

3 Strip 1/2 inch of insulation off both ends of each speaker wire. For example, if five speakers will be connected, cut and strip insulation from both ends of five lengths of speaker wire.

4 Connect the red speaker wire to the positive (red) terminal on the back of the receiver and to the corresponding speaker by lifting the plastic clip to expose the hole for inserting the wire. Connect the other wire to the black (negative) terminals on the receiver and speaker in the same manner. Each speaker connection will be labelled on the back of the receiver. For example, the left front speaker connects to the left front terminals on the receiver.

5 Turn on the equipment, then press the "Input" button on the TV remote control until the cable or satellite signal appears on the screen. Choose a channel for viewing. Programs available in surround sound are typically listed in the on-screen programming guide available with most cable and satellite systems. The message "presented in surround sound" may also be displayed on the screen before the start of a show.

6 Press the "SURR" or "Surround" button on the AV receiver remote control to turn on the surround sound processor, then select the "TV" button on the remote control to connect the receiver with the television. Adjust the volume level on the receiver remote to set the sound the desired level.

Tips and warnings

Unplug the electronics from the power while connecting audio and AV cables.
