Hearty, Disease-Resistant Roses

Rose growers strive to produce healthy, hearty roses with lush blooms. Unfortunately, sometimes their efforts are thwarted by common rose diseases such as black spot, rust and powdery mildew. Disease-resistant varieties have natural abilities to fight and resist these diseases.

Benefits

Disease-resistant roses enable growers to spend less time examining plants for diseased canes and to spend less money purchasing chemical pesticides to combat diseases. Less pesticide use helps maintain populations of beneficial insects and butterflies and is better for the environment. Although some disease-resistant roses are not fragrant, they have been bred to provide continuous blooms throughout summer.

Varieties

Many disease-resistant rose varieties are available -- 43 per cent of the roses at the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden at the New York Botanical Garden are considered disease resistant. One of the most disease-resistant varieties available is the Knock Out rose. Other popular hearty roses include the Carefree and Flower Carpet shrubs, Sally Holmes, Robin Red Breast, Ghislaine de Feligonde, Wonderstripe and Rosamundi varieties.

Care

Disease-resistant roses still require good care to remain healthy and thriving. Nutrient-rich soil, abundant sunlight, good air circulation, mulching to deter weeds and regular watering all contribute to strong plants that are able to resist disease.
