How Do I Make a External Battery for Tomtom One?

TomTom is a manufacturer and supplier of mobile navigation equipment, typically for use in a vehicle. The TomTom One is part of range of devices that is powered by an internal 3.7 volt lithium polymer (LiPo), or lithium ion (Li-ion) battery. The battery can be charged via a USB cable connected to a cigarette lighter in a vehicle. However, many vehicles no longer have cigarette lighters fitted, making it more difficult to charge your TomTom One battery while on the road. If you have difficulties finding a suitable way to charge your TomTom battery, then make yourself a LiPo battery pack wired in parallel. It eliminates your concerns about the TomTom One failing to operate due to a dead internal battery.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Two LiPo batteriesInsulating tapeAWG 18 gauge wireSmall knifeWire strippersCharger adaptor cable (supplied with TomTom One)

Instructions

1 Get two LiPo batteries from an electrical store. Each LiPo battery produces 3.7 volts and wiring two batteries in parallel maintains the same voltage, but doubles the endurance. The external battery for your TomTom One lasts twice as long as the internal battery.

2 Put your LiPo batteries on a table next to each other. Wrap insulating tape around the two batteries to form an external battery pack for your TomTom One.

3 Cut four strips of AWG 18-gauge wire using a small knife. Two strips need to be long enough to reach between where you intend to place your external battery pack and where your TomTom is located. Use a tape measure to work out the length each wire needs to be. The two remaining strips need to be about 2 inches long -- just enough to reach between each LiPo battery terminal.

4 Use wire strippers to remove ¼-inch of plastic from the end of each strip of wire. Label the two wire strips "+" and "-" -- since you need to be able to clearly identify the two wires once you have made your external TomTom battery pack.

5 Connect the end of one of the short strips of wire to the positive terminal of the first LiPo battery using insulating tape. Connect the end of the other short strip of wire to the negative terminal of the first LiPo battery using the same method. The terminals on the battery are clearly marked "+" and "-."

6 Twist the opposite end of the short wire strip connected to the positive terminal of the first battery and the end of the wire strip you labelled "+" together using your fingers. Twist the opposite end of the short wire strip connected to the negative terminal of the first battery and the end of the wire strip you labelled "-" together using your fingers.

7 Attach the two twisted ends of wire labelled "+" to the positive terminal of the second LiPo battery using tape. Attach the two twisted ends of wire labelled "-" to the negative terminal of the second LiPo battery.

8 Wrap the entire back using insulating tape, so that the terminal and connections are completely covered. Ensure you leave the long wires labelled "+" and "-" exposed since you need to connect these to your TomTom.

9 Use the end of the charger adaptor cable supplied with your TomTom that connects to a cigarette lighter to connect the two wires from the battery pack. The adaptor plug that fits into a cigarette lighter has two terminals. The middle terminal is a round metal pin and is the positive terminal. The outer metal cover is the negative terminal.

10 Put the end of the wire from the battery pack labelled "+" on the central pin and wrap a strip of insulating tape over it so it holds the wire on the pin. Put the end of the wire from the battery pack onto the outer metal cover and wrap tape around it to hold it in place.

11 Insert the USB plug on the opposite end of the adaptor cable into the USB charging socket on your TomTom. Your TomTom now operates using power supplied from the external battery.
