How Do I Modify Halloween Tombstones?

Tombstones are a spooky way to up the creep-out factor for your Halloween decorations, and repurposing old tombstone decorations can help you recycle items you have on hand. You can remove old epitaphs and create new ones, or give peeling gravestones a facelift, and the props will look brand new. With some basic materials and tools you can modify last year's tombstones for a fresh start and have a fun afternoon of Halloween crafting.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Old prop tombstonesRagsSandpaperSpray paintNewspaperBlack paintThin paint brush

Instructions

1 Clean off your prop tombstones with a dust rag, removing any dirt or debris that may have accumulated while the props were in storage over the past year. Any dust will show up when it comes time to paint.

2 Sand down the tombstones, if they are made of wood or foam. You can remove any raised lettering on the tombstones with the sandpaper, making a clean state to write your modified epitaph. Use the sandpaper to modify the shape of the tombstone, making rounded corners or slanted edges.

3 Lay the tombstones on sheets of newspaper outside. Spray them each with a coat of grey spray paint and let them dry. Spray them with a second coat, and let them dry.

4 Write your epitaph on the tombstones using black acrylic paint and a thin paint brush. Write funny rhymes using the names of your friends or relatives, or make up fake names for the tombstones. Epitaphs like "Rest in Peace" and "Here Lies John" are classics that you can alter to your own liking. Let the tombstones dry.

5 Set the tombstones up in your front yard, making sure any leaves or debris are removed from the lawn first.

Tips and warnings

Use glow-in-the-dark paint for a ghostly glow at night.

If fumes from the paint become too intense, wear a paper mask while working.
