How to Airbrush Rips

Airbrushing rips and tears makes a canvas appear that it has been slashed open, with pieces of material hanging from the tear. This is accomplished by creating stencils out of a material called frisket, a self-adhesive plastic. Frisket is low-tack, so you can stick it onto a work in progress with no worry of it pulling off any paint. With a few passes with your airbrush, your canvas will look like it was attacked by a crazy person.

Instructions

1 Peel the backing off of a piece of frisket and apply it to the canvas, adhesive-side down.

2

How to Airbrush Rips

Sketch both the interior of the tear and the shreds of material falling away with a pencil.

3 Cut the frisket along the pencil lines with a sharp razor blade. You must cut extremely carefully to avoid cutting the canvas.

4 Peel off the frisket, covering the interior of the tear, and set it aside.

5 Airbrush black onto the exposed canvas. If you prefer to have an image or another colour showing through the tear, paint that instead.

6 Allow the paint to dry.

7 Replace the piece of frisket you previously removed.

8 Remove the pieces of frisket that made up the shredded material.

9 Airbrush a base colour onto the exposed canvas. The shredded area of the rip can be a similar colour to the surface, or it can be radically different to show that the back of the canvas is a different colour.

10 Airbrush shadows onto the inner portion of the shreds to show depth.

11 Remove the frisket from the canvas and freehand some shadowing under some of the shreds to further simulate depth.
