How to Apply Trim to an Exterior Door

The trim on the outside of an exterior door needs to seal and hide the space between the door casing and the wall, while visually tying the doorway into the rest of the exterior. Trimming the exterior of a door is basically the same process as trimming the interior, except that it usually requires larger trim. Also, it's important that you properly seal the trim with weatherizing caulk in order to seal out air flow and prevent rain from getting behind it.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

Tape measureExterior door trim, 1-by-4-inch or similar, pre-primedMitre sawTrim nailsHammerWeatherizing caulk

Instructions

1 Measure the width of the doorway from the two top corners. Mark out the measurements along the bottom of piece of exterior door trim. Leave at least 6 inches of extra space beyond each mark.

2 Set the trim on a mitre saw with the marked edge facing the blade and one of the marks lined up with it. Turn the blade to 45 degrees pointing outward from the main span of the trim. Cut.

3 Move the other mark in front of the blade. Turn the blade to 45 degrees in the opposite direction as before, so that it points away from the main span of the trim. Cut it. The top edge of the trim should be longer on both ends than the bottom edge.

4 Set the trim over the top of the doorway, with the bottom edge of the trim sitting along the top edge of the opening. The piece should crown out over the two sides of the doorway from the corners. Nail it in place with your hammer and trim nails, putting them along the top and bottom of the piece every foot or so.

5 Follow the same procedure to measure and cut the two vertical pieces of trim along the sides of the doorway, except straight-cut the bottom ends of the pieces instead of mitre-cutting them.

6 Install vertical pieces in the same manner, nailing along both edges. The upward-facing mitres on the trim should butt with the mitres of the top piece to form the corners, while the straight cuts along the bottom ends should stand on the porch or slab.

Tips and warnings

Caulk all around the lines where the trim meets the house, and along the lines between the mitres. Let the caulk set for 24 hours. The trim is now ready for painting.
