How to arrange furniture in a living room with two couches

When you have a living room that contains two couches, decide where to put them before you arrange the rest of the furniture. The size of the room, the amount of other furniture you want to include and the ways you typically use the room are all considerations that will affect your arrangement. Keep in mind two basic principles: create a space where people can sit close enough to one another to carry on a conversation, and avoid "dead" space in the middle of a larger room by pulling the couches away from the walls.

Skill level:Moderate

Instructions

1 Remove all of the furniture, rugs, art and accessories from the living room, except for the two couches. Determine whether your room is big enough to create two distinct seating areas, or if you have room for only one.

2 Place two small couches in similar styles, sizes and shapes in the centre of a small living room. Situate them facing one another. Place a medium-sized coffee table between them. Add an area rug that is either slightly smaller or slightly larger than the area the couches create. Place accent chairs, lamps and side tables around this central area. Pull the room together by placing bookshelves against the walls, hanging art and installing a large mirror across from a window.

3 Place a long, narrow vintage couch a sufficient distance away from one long wall in a large room to allow a clear path for walking behind it. Place a smaller vintage couch in a contrasting style at a 90-degree angle to the long couch. Put a quirky side table between the couches, and top it with a retro lamp. Add one-of-a-kind chairs facing the couches for additional seating. Use a showstopping footrest with one of the chairs for a warm, eclectic arrangement.

4 Use the couches to anchor two distinct seating areas in a large room. Create a soothing hangout area by placing one medium-sized modern couch near a picture window, your record collection, piles of books and several indoor trees. Keep floor pillows nearby for additional seating. Create a seating area in another section of the room by placing the other couch on the opposite wall facing several chairs. Add a pendant lamp and area rugs to each area to further distinguish them. Paint or wallpaper the whole room in a colour that enhances both couches to unify the look.
