How to be a productivity consultant

A productivity consultant, also known as a time-management consultant, is a management consultancy professional who helps businesses get more from their resources. A large feature of their job is the time and motion study, which they use to measure time standards, employee output, targets, capacity and costs, as well as to figure out how to improve flow and eliminate waste so that the workforce can work more productively. The job is diverse. Business solutions can range from something as simple as re-designating incoming emails, to a whole scale review of building design for optimum space layout.

Skill level:Moderately Challenging

Instructions

1 Review your qualifications. There are no academic qualifications specific to productivity consulting, but according to Inside Careers, management consultancy professionals generally hold at least a Bachelor's degree, usually in management or a subject with a high degree of numeracy. That said, certain productivity consultancies offer training and workshops on aspects of time management and business flow - try Think Productive (see Resources). Some Masters of Business Administration (MBA) programmes offer electives in productivity. Search for available courses at Education UK (see Resources).

2 Gain commercial experience. Productivity consultants formulate their own theories for increasing business output based on years of commercial experience, and as such, it is not an entry level career. Many professionals begin life as management consultants or business analysts, or have backgrounds in strategic planning and analysis, business process re-engineering, organisational change, financial or IT systems and/or marketing. To be commercially credible, you will need first-hand experience in one or more of the following sectors: financial services, technology, industry, fast moving consumer goods and/or the public sector.

3 Hone your soft skills. Consultants work with little or no supervision. You will need to be mature, self-motivated, and have confidence in your opinions. Communication and inter-personal skills are a must, as are time management skills and organisational abilities. Consultants must be prepared to travel and work away from home.

4 Make the transition to productivity consultant by seeking an employed position within a specialist department or firm, or by setting up your own consultancy. Search online for executive recruitment agencies in your area, and make use of business social networking sites such as LinkedIn. Make yourself marketable by publishing your theories in a book or an ebook, starting a productivity blog and/or speaking at business conferences. Getting your name out there creates contacts and increases your credibility in the field.

Tips and warnings

Consider testing the waters by offering productivity consulting as a part-time business while keeping your usual employment. It takes time to build up a client base.
