How to Become a Demolition Engineer

Demolition workers perform the necessary task of tearing down old structures or levelling terrain to make way for new structures and roads. There are three general types of demolition work: general manual labour, operation of heavy demolition machinery, and handling of explosives. There are no specific education prerequisites for entry-level demolition work, but proof of education will certainly help you to gain employment.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

High school diploma or GED (recommended)State-issued license (for those handling explosives)

Instructions

1 Take science and math courses in high school. A basic knowledge of chemistry and electronics will help you with the more advanced level of demolition work.

2 Join a construction workers union. Unions provide training and information about job opportunities. Not all employers will be union employers, but joining the union will open you up to both union and non-union jobs.

3 Find a suitable job. Whether you do so through your union or through conventional job search methods, make sure that your employer provides adequate insurance coverage for the dangerous work you will be doing.

4 Seek continuing training. You will probably start out doing manual labour only. Most of the training that provides you with the adequate expertise and licensure for higher-level positions is done on-the-job.
