How to Build a 12-Foot Deer Stand With Wood

Hunting deer from an elevated tree stand is a completely different experience from hunting on the ground, and it is often more enjoyable and successful. A height of 12 feet above the ground is sufficient to keep your presence from attracting the attention of nearby deer, if you stay quiet. A deer stand also provides an opportunity to set up a mini-camp, including shelter from light rain, a place to hang up clothing and equipment, and a built-in gun rest.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

Plywood, 1/2-inchBoards, 2-by-4 inchTarpStoolMeasuring tapeCordless drillGalvanised screwsCircular sawHammerNailsStaple gun

Instructions

1 Scout a location for your deer stand. Look for a group of at least three trees growing fairly close together, so that the tree trunks are no further than four feet apart at an elevation of 12 feet above the ground. The trunks should be at least 20 inches in diameter. Locate your stand near a densely thicketed area if possible, since deer tend to stay near thickets during hunting season.

2 Measure the distance between two adjacent trunks, and cut a series of 2-by-4 inch boards to span the gap. Screw the boards into the trunks at 18-inch intervals to make a year-round ladder.

3 Measure the distances between the three trunks at an elevation of 12 feet above the ground. Take your measurements from the interior edges of the trunks. Cut three lengths of 2-by-4 inch board to fit.

4 Cut a section of half-inch plywood to fit the shape created by the three lengths of 2-by-4 framework. Screw the 2-by-4 to the interior edges of the trunks, and screw the plywood platform onto the framework.

5 Measure the distances between the trunks again, this time at a point 3 feet above the platform. Cut three lengths of 2-by-4 board to fit, and screw the boards into the trunks to create a railing. This railing will also serve as a gun rest.

6 Staple a tarp overhead, approximately 6 feet above the platform. Pull the tarp tight while stapling so that rainwater will not pool in the tarp. Drive a few nails into the tree trunks to serve as hooks for clothing and equipment, and install a small stool onto the platform.

7 Complete your tree stand at least one month before hunting season, giving the deer time to adjust to its presence in the forest.

Tips and warnings

Always exercise caution when operating power tools.

Check your stand prior to the beginning of each season for signs of rot or damage.
