How to build a cookie tin banjo

Playing musical instruments can be an enjoyable past-time that can help teach you patterns and rhythm. One way to make playing music even more enjoyable is to create a simple instrument yourself out of everyday materials, such as cookie tins. For example, a cookie tin can be used to make a banjo, which can then be played for fun in a backyard jamboree.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Cookie tinMetal sawWood, 1/2 inch thick by 36 inches long by 3 inches wideDrillScrewsThin wire1/2 inch thick dowelsSmall tacksHammer

Instructions

1 Cut a 4-inch hole out of the centre of the cookie tin.

2 Place the piece of wood against the cookie tin so that the tin is positioned in the centre and at the end of the wood.

3 Screw the wood to the cookie tin with a drill.

4 Stretch six pieces of thin wire across the length of the wood.

5 Tack the wire in place at the end of the wood and at the base of the cookie tin.

6 Place 1/2-inch thick pieces of dowel underneath the strings near the base of the cookie tin. This will lift up the strings slightly to allow them to vibrate. Your cookie tin banjo is now ready to play.
