How to Build a Pellet Gun Trap

Practicing marksmanship with a pellet gun allows shooters to develop their aim while saving money on ammunition. Pellet traps furnish the shooter with a safe environment for practicing in their own home or yard. A do-it-yourself pellet trap, when used properly, allows safe target practice without a trip to the range.

Skill level:Moderately Challenging

Things you need

6 foot long 1x12 inch board19x18 inch 3/4 inch plywood5.44 Kilogram duct seal2 foot long 1x4 inch board1/4 pound 2 inch deck screws

Instructions

1 Cut a frame of 1x12-inch lumber with a top and bottom 18 inches long and the two sides 19 inches long. Cut a back of 3/4 inch plywood 19x18 inches.

2 Fasten the frame to the plywood back piece using 2-inch deck screws. The resulting unit is low box with an enclosed bottom and sides and an open top when looked at from above.

3 Pack the bottom of this box, the interior side of the plywood back, with duct seal. Duct seal is a pliable putty used in heating duct applications. Place a layer of duct seal at least two inches thick across the plywood. This may take up to 5.44 Kilogram of duct seal.

4 Set the pellet gun trap on end so that the duct seal lined plywood interior of the box faces toward the shooting position.

5 Attach a 1x4-inch piece of lumber across the top of the opening. Add clips, such as a clipboard clip to this trim board to hang targets from.

Tips and warnings

Build the pellet gun trap larger for multiple targets or just to provide a larger backstop for errant pellets. Increase the dimensions of the top, bottom and sides as well as the plywood back. Use addition duct seal to create a 2-inch thick layer across the entire backstop.

Test the backstop in a safe shooting range environment. Increase the thickness of the duct putty if the pellets penetrate the putty and strike the plywood backing. Always wear safety shooting glasses when handling guns of any type including pellet guns.
