How to Build Outdoor Glass & Wooden Display Cases

Outdoor glass and wooden display cases are used display important objects outside. Display cases such as these need to be made out of sturdy materials in order to hold glass sheets and need to be constructed out of weather-resistant materials. Treated lumber and cedar are two good examples. Treated lumber contains chemicals to resist the weather while cedar has a natural capability of doing this. Cedar is often used for various outdoor projects.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

Tape measureFour cedar boards, 2-by-2-by-48-inchesFour cedar boards, 1-by-4-by-24-inchesFour cedar boards, 1-by-4-by-26-inchesTwo cedar plywood, 1/2-by-26-by-26-inchesTable saw, with fenceScrew gun40 wood screws, 3 inches long4 glass sheets, 1/8-by-23-by-48-inches

Instructions

1 Position the fence on the table saw so it is 1-inch away from the blade. Raise the blade to 1/2-inch above the table. Run a 48-inch board across the blade keeping its 48-inch edge against the fence. Rotate the board 90 degrees and run the board across the blade again keeping the 48-inch groove against the fence. Repeat this step with each 48-inch board. These grooves will hold your glass sides.

2 Lay two 48-inch boards flat and parallel so one pair of grooves are facing the ground and so the other pair are facing each other. Space the boards so their outside edges are 24 inches apart. Lay two 24-inch boards perpendicularly on top of the boards so their ends are flush with the sides of the 48-inch boards and so one edge of each 24-inch board is flush with one pair of ends of the 48-inch boards. Screw the 24-inch boards to the 48-inch boards using four screws for each board. Repeat this step with the last two 48-inch and 24-inch boards.

3 Position the pairs of 48-inch boards upright so the four 24-inch boards are parallel. The 48-inch boards should be between the 24-inch boards and the outside edges of the 24-inch boards should be 26 inches apart. Position a 26-inch board against the ends of the 24-inch boards so the corners are flush. Screw the 26-inch boards in this position using four screws for each board. This is the frame to your display case.

4 Set the frame on its side so the 1-by-4-inch boards are vertical. Position a sheet of plywood against the ends of the 48-inch boards so its edges are flush with the 1-by-4-inch boards. Screw the plywood to the ends of the 48-inch board so each screw is 1 inch away from each edge of the corner. This is the bottom to your case.

5 Slide each sheet of glass in the grooves of 48-inch board. Position the case upright and add your contents to the case. Lay the last sheet of plywood on top of the 48-inch boards and screw it down following the same process as you did in the previous step.
