How to Build Your Own Laptop Kits

A do-it-yourself laptop kit is known as a "barebone," which is essentially a hollow plastic casing enclosing the computer's metallic chassis. Almost all barebone laptops have the motherboard, LCD screen and keyboard already attached to form the structure. Barebone laptops are manufactured by several companies, such as Asus and MSI, and they may or may not come with components such as optical drives and the hard disk drive preinstalled. You can customise a barebone by adding the processor, RAM modules, wireless card, video card and other components you want. Customising a laptop is cheaper than buying a branded product of comparable performance, and it gives you the option to choose your own components.

Skill level:Moderate

Instructions

1 Disassemble the barebone laptop. Turn it over and unscrew the detachable plastic parts from the base of the laptop. With the casings off, you will see vacant slots for the CPU (processor), RAM modules and the wireless card. Apart from screws, you may also have to undo locking mechanisms such as clips or hooks to remove the casings.

2 Access the CPU socket, a flat square arrangement with rows of very fine holes. Depending on model, you may have to dismount another internal component, usually the heatsink, to access the socket. If the slot is blocked, remove the obstacle by holding it firmly from either side and manoeuvring to loosen its attachment. Raise the component and remove to expose the CPU slot.

3 Insert the CPU. Orient the processor by holding it above the socket, and align the pins of the processor with the holes in the socket. Gently lower it into place. Make sure the processor is perfectly in place, and slowly press down to firmly attach it. Activate any locking mechanisms such as clips or screws. Mount any component you removed to access the slot, and put the casing back on.

4 Insert RAM (memory) modules. Hold the first module and tilt it slightly to form an angle with the slot. With the ends of the module aligned with the slot, and maintaining the angle, gently insert it. Make sure the module's teeth correspond to notches on the slot. Press the module all the way in, until the teeth are not visible; you will hear it snap into place. Do the same with all memory modules. Screw on the plastic casing.

5 Install the laptop's wireless card. Place the card in its chamber, and hold it in place with clips or screws. You may have to attach the card to a metal bracket before installing it. Next, connect the card to two small wires ending in the slot; attach the colour-coded wires to the appropriate terminals on the card. Replace the cover and screw on tightly.

6 Insert the hard disk drive. Attach the component to its bracket and insert it into its dock in the laptop. Screw the drive to the bracket on either side to ensure that the drive is held firmly in place. Depending on the barebone model, you may have to insert the drive by either sliding it or lowering it into its dock. Make sure the integrated drive electronics (IDE) pins are well aligned with the drive. Put the cover back on. Insert the battery pack, and turn on the laptop.

Tips and warnings

Follow any specific recommendations from the manufacturer when assembling your laptop.

Do not install an incompatible component.
