How to Change an Oxygen Sensor in a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer

The 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer has a single oxygen sensor located on the exhaust manifold at the front of the engine. This makes replacing it fairly easy. The sensor determines the amount of oxygen in the exhaust and sends that information to the engine's computer. That, in turn, controls how much fuel and spark go into the engine to maximise efficiency. If it malfunctions, the engine will run lean or rich, so the sensor will need to be replaced.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Oxygen sensor socket3/8-inch ratchetReplacement oxygen sensorAnti-seize compound

Instructions

1 Pop the bonnet and locate the oxygen sensor which is on the exhaust manifold directly behind the core support. Unplug the electrical connection from the vehicle to the sensor by hand.

2 Install the oxygen sensor socket onto the oxygen sensor so that the wire runs out of the slot on the side of the socket then connect the 3/8-inch ratchet to the socket. Remove the sensor with the ratchet and discard it.

3 Coat the threads on the replacement oxygen sensor with anti-seize compound, making sure not to get it on the sensor body itself. Install the sensor in the exhaust manifold using the oxygen sensor socket and ratchet. Reconnect the electrical connection by hand.
