How to Change Car Glass

Whether it's a damaged windshield or side window, a broken glass pane in your vehicle is not only a danger to those inside, it also puts your vehicle at risk of potentially being stolen. If any of your vehicle's windows become damaged, you need to replace them as soon as possible. Removing the old window and installing a new one is a relatively easy job that can be completed in a few hours.

Things you need

Phillips-head screwdriverHex wrenchNylon cordSharp bladeRubber windshield gasketWindshield sealant

Instructions

Replace the Side Window.

1 Open up the door that contains the damaged side window. Locate the screws which hold the door panel in place. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws on the panel and remove it from the door.

2 Remove the two screws that hold the door handle in place and pull the handle away from the door. Locate the two linkage rods within the door which connect the door handle to the door lock. Disconnect these rods using your fingers and remove them from the door. This will make it easier to access the window panel at the bottom of the door.

3 Press the window as far down as you can within the frame. Locate the mounting bolts that connect the bottom of the window to the window regulator. The regulator is the metal device that has a horizontal bar that attaches to the bottom of the window. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts and free the window within the frame.

4 Put on protective gloves and lift the window from the frame. Be careful handling the damaged glass.

5 Place the new window into the side window frame. Line up the bolt holes at the bottom of the window with those on the horizontal bar of the regulator. Insert the bolts and tighten with a wrench to secure the window in place. Follow the removal steps in reverse to reattach the linkage rods, door handle and door panel.

Replace the Windshield.

1 Locate the rubber trim around the edge of the windshield, and use a knife to cut it away. Cut around the entire edge and remove all of the trim.

2 Enter the front seat of your vehicle and push the windshield away from the window frame. Have an assistant support the weight of the windshield from the outside.

3 Put a layer of windshield sealant around the edges of the new windshield. Place the new rubber gasket at the bottom of the windshield with the heavy section on the inside of the windshield. Hold the gasket against the frame to allow the gasket to attach securely to the shield.

4 Tie a nylon cord around the outer edges of the windshield and lift it into the frame. Press around the edges of the windshield to secure it against the frame.

5 Enter your vehicle and pull the nylon cord across the top of your dashboard to secure the gasket's rubber lip in place.
