How to Change Front Brakes on a 2000 Buick Century

The brake pads on a 2000 Buick Century are equipped with a low pad sensor. This sensor is a small metal tab on the side of the brake pad. When the brake pads become worn to the point that they are in need of replacement, the sensors on the side of the pad will contact the rotor each time the brakes are applied. This causes an audible squeal to warn the operator that it is time to replace the pads.

Skill level:Moderately Challenging

Things you need

Floor jackJack stands3/8-inch drive ratchetSet of 3/8-inch drive socketsSet of 3/8-inch drive Allen bit socketsCommon screwdriverSet of wrenchesDripping pan

Instructions

1 Lift the front of the car with the floor jack and place jack stands under the car's frame for support. Remove the front wheels, using the lug wrench to remove the lug nuts. Loosen the brake caliper bleeder screw on the top of the caliper--just loosen the bleeder, do not remove it.

2 Place the dripping pan under the caliper. Insert the screwdriver between the inner brake pad and the rotor, then pry the brake caliper piston back into its bore. Retighten the bleeder screw. Loosen and remove the two caliper retaining bolts, using the appropriate size Allen bit and a ratchet.

3 Lift the caliper off the rotor and remove the brake pads. The outer pad is held on by spring pressure from the two pieces of spring steel that can be seen on the front of the caliper. Insert the screwdriver in the recess of the spring clip and pry the spring clip off the caliper. The inner pad has a circular spring that is inserted into the brake caliper piston. This pad could be pulled out by hand.

4 Lay the new pads face down and spread the anti-squeal compound, provided with the pads, on the metal backing plate on the rear of the pads. Allow it to set up for 15 minutes.

5 Install the inner pad by lining the spring clips on the back of the pad with the hole in the caliper piston and pushing the pad in until it is flush with the piston. Install the outer pad by placing the pad at the bottom of the caliper and pushing upward to lock the spring clip in place.

6 Install the caliper and the two securing bolts. Tighten with the Allen bit. Install the wheels and tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Check and fill the master cylinder as necessary.
