The Honda VTX 1800 is the second generation of VTX cruiser motorcycles that feature two cylinder engines. The VTX 1800 features a shared hand and foot brake system: the hand brakes control two-thirds of the front caliper pistons, and the foot brakes operate one third of the front caliper pistons and all of the rear pistons. This set-up does not change the importance of replacing worn brake pads, however. Expect the process to take five minutes for each wheel.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

Socket wrench set5mm Allen wrenchBrake pads, part number B004C1MVDW

Instructions

1 Kneel on the right side of the front wheel of your VTX 1800. Loosen and remove the two 12mm bolts mounting the caliper to the rotor with your socket wrench.

2 Remove the 5mm pin securing the brake pad bracket in the caliper with your Allen wrench. Both brake pads should fall out when the pin is removed.

3 Set the new inboard and outboard brake pads in the caliper on the brake pad bracket.

4 Slide your screwdriver between the two brake pads. Push back and forth with the screwdriver to press the brake pads against the caliper bars, in effect pushing the hydraulic caliper pistons in. This action allows the caliper to fit over the rotor.

5 Replace the 5mm pin removed earlier

6 Set the caliper back over the rotor. Remount the two 12mm bolts removed earlier.
