Over time knotty pine walls go from being bright to dull. If you want to change the look of your knotty pine walls, you can choose to stain them. This allows you to keep the natural wood look while still changing the look of the room. There is no need to hire a professional to do the job for you. You can do this yourself or with a friend's help for just the cost of the supplies.

Sand the entire surface of each knotty pine wall, using an electric hand held sander. Sand down 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch, or until the bare and unfinished wood is exposed and you've completely removed all of the old finish. Wear a face mask while sanding to avoid breathing in the dust, and ventilate the room well.
Remove all of the sanding dust from each wall and the floor below, using a soft cloth and a shop vacuum. All dust created from sanding should be gone when you apply the stain.
Apply stain to each wall, using a soft cloth, doing one wall at a time. Work in small 4 foot wide and 4 foot high sections to avoid having the stain set on the wall too long, which creates dark spots and edge lines. Work in small areas to ensure all excess stain gets wiped off promptly.
Slowly pour polyurethane into a paint tray. Do not stir the polyurethane before using--it creates air bubbles. Apply the polyurethane to each wall, using a roller. Fill in the areas that the roller cannot reach--such as the corners and edges--using an edger or a small paint brush. Apply the polyurethane as soon as you are finished staining, there is no wait time.
Allow the first coat of polyurethane to dry for 4 to 6 hours. Apply a second coat of polyurethane to each wall to ensure that the walls will be washable and the stain will be protected. Allow the second coat of poly to dry for 12 hours, or overnight, before using or furnishing the room.
