How to Change the Spark Plugs in a 2000 VW Jetta

You should replace the spark plugs on your Jetta any time you notice your engine misfiring or during your Jetta's routine tune-ups, every 30,000 miles. You can buy spark plugs for your Jetta at a VW dealership or at any auto parts store. Replace your spark plugs with the same brand of plugs that came with the Jetta from the factory, if possible. If you are unsure which plugs you need, talk with an associate at an auto parts counter or at the dealership for help selecting the right ones.

Instructions

1 Disconnect the negative battery cable from the terminal with a wrench or socket and ratchet. Secure the cable away from the battery to avoid contact with the terminal while you are changing the plugs.

2 Grasp the boot on the spark plug and pull straight upward while twisting slightly to free the boot from the plug. Be sure to remove only one boot at a time to avoid confusing the firing order.

3 Turn the spark plug counterclockwise with a spark plug socket and a ratchet fitted with an extension. Remove the plug completely from the cylinder head. Discard the old spark plug.

4 Insert a new plug, threading it by hand to avoid cross-threading the plug. If the area is difficult to reach, disconnect the extension from your ratchet and use the spark plug socket and extension to help you insert the plug securely.

5 Secure the plug completely using the spark plug socket and ratchet. Do not over-tighten the plug, as this can damage the threads in the head.

6 Reconnect the boot to the plug after applying a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the boot. The boot will click when it locks into place.

7 Repeat this for each of the remaining plugs. Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten it completely with a wrench.
