The 1996 Chevy S10 with a 4.3-litre V6 engine was very popular in both the two and four-wheel drive models. The starter motor is located on the passenger’s side of the engine and access to the mounting bolts is from under the truck. If the starter on your S10 needs replacing, a new starter motor is available from the Chevy dealer, auto parts stores or as a used part from many salvage yards, if that better fits your budget.

Instructions

1 Open the bonnet and locate the negative battery cable on the negative battery terminal of the battery. Loosen or remove the retaining bolt from the cable end with a wrench and remove the cable from the battery.

2 Position a jack under the front of your S10 and raise the truck off the ground. Support the truck on a set of jack stands positioned under the frame of the truck. Locate the starter under the passenger’s side of the engine compartment.

3 Remove the two nuts from the rear of the starter solenoid terminals with a socket and ratchet, and then slide the wires off the terminals, making note of which wire came off of which stud. The terminals are marked “S” and “B” in the plastic on the solenoid next to the terminals.

4 Remove the two mounting bolts from the front of the starter using a socket and ratchet. Lower the starter out of the engine compartment and set it aside. Position the new starter in the engine compartment and install the two mounting bolts. Torque them to 37 pound-feet with a torque wrench.

5 Connect the wires that you removed from the old starter to the terminals on the new starter. Connect the large red wire to the “B” terminal and the smaller wires to the “S” terminal. Tighten the retaining nuts on the terminals with a socket and ratchet.

6 Position your jack under the front of the truck and raise it off the jack stands. Remove the stands from under the truck, then lower the S10 back to the ground and remove the jack.

7 Install the negative battery cable onto the negative terminal on the battery and install the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts with a wrench to secure the cable ends. Start the truck to ensure the starter is working properly.
