How to charge 24 volt batteries

Batteries installed in vehicles, boats or other machinery are used to start the engine. Once the engine is running, the battery is charged by an alternator attached to the engine. Electrical systems in cars are usually 12-volt systems, while heavy duty machinery, boats and larger vehicles run on a 24-volt system. If the alternator on the engine is not functioning properly, the battery may not be receiving enough current to be recharged, requiring the battery to be removed and charged separately.

Things you need

Socket wrench24-volt battery charger

Instructions

1 Turn the vehicle, boat or machinery off, loosen the connectors on the battery cables and remove the cables from the posts on the battery.

2 Unhook or loosen the mounting bracket that holds the battery in position.

3 Place the battery in a dry ventilated space. Batteries contain chemicals that give off gasses during recharging.

4 Connect the charger's red clamp to the red or positive post on the battery. Connect the charger's black clamp to the black or negative post on the battery.

5 Set the voltage on the charger to "24". Plug the charger in and turn the power on. Some chargers have settings that will provide a choice of charging the battery on a "trickle" charge or a "normal" charge. If set to "trickle" charge, leave the battery on the charger overnight. If set to "normal", the battery should be charged in two to four hours, depending on the condition of the battery prior to charging.

6 Turn the charger off when the charging is complete, and unplug the charger. Replace the battery in the vehicle, boat or machinery. Secure it in place with its mounting bracket. Connect the cables to the appropriate battery posts, and your recharged battery should be ready to go.
