How to Charge AC Delco Batteries

AC Delco batteries have become the battery of choice for many car and boat owners, as the company has built up a solid reputation over the years. All batteries can lose their charge---especially as they grow older. The best way to charge your AC Delco battery involves using a battery charger set to "trickle charge." The lowest rate of charge, trickle charging takes considerable time but gives the best results, allowing your battery to retain more power. Even if you have no problems with your AC Delco battery, put it on a slow charge occasionally for higher overall endurance.

Instructions

1 Put your AC Delco battery into a battery tray on a flat, safe surface. Position your battery charger near the battery.

2 Connect the black negative cable from your battery charger to the negative terminal on your battery. (The terminals will have clear labels.) The cable connectors have large spring clips that fit comfortably on the terminal.

3 Connect the red positive cable from your battery charger to the positive terminal on your battery. Double-check to ensure that you've connected both cables firmly.

4 Set your battery charger to the lowest rate of charge. Plug your charger into the electricity supply. Turn on the charger. Check the charge rate. Leave the battery to charge for at least 12 hours or, if possible, 24 hours if the battery has completely died.

5 Check the indicator on the battery charger to ensure your battery is full. Some chargers have a light that illuminates once the battery is full; others have a meter that shows the charge rate. When it falls to near zero, your battery is charged. Turn off your charger, and disconnect the cables.

Tips and warnings

Most batteries are sealed units; if your battery has removable caps on the six battery cells, carefully remove them prior to charging. Wear rubber gloves, as the cells contain sulphuric acid, which burns skin.
