Black mould can be unsightly on wood surfaces. It can also be extremely damaging. If you have black mould on your wood surface, clean it off as soon as you can. Otherwise, the black mould will continue to eat at the wood and eventually cause permanent structural damage. At this point, the wood may need to be cut away and completely discarded.

Rubber glovesPlastic scraper or scrubbing brushBucketWaterBleachWooden spoonSpray bottlesSpongeTowel

Instructions

1 Put on some thick rubber gloves before you start the cleaning process.

2 Scrape away remnants of the black mould if it is very thick. Use a plastic scraper or thick-bristled scrubbing brush.

3 Pour 1 gallon of water into a bucket along with ½ a cup of bleach. Stir with a wooden spoon.

4 Fill a spray bottle with the bleach mixture from the bucket. Shake the bottle to mix more.

5 Spray the wood surface with the bleach solution. Get the areas with black mould plenty wet. Spray about 6 inches out from where you can see mould to make sure you kill it all.

6 Wait about 10 to 12 minutes. Scrub the wood surface using the rough side of a sponge. Keep scrubbing until all the black mould has been cleaned.

7 Fill another spray bottle with warm water. Spray the wood surface again to rinse away mould and bleach remnants. Dry the wood as best you can with a towel.
