How to clean hair out of shower drains with baking soda

It is not uncommon for hair to clog shower drains. When we wash our hair in the shower, strands fall out and build up in the drain. Although a drain catcher will help reduce the amount of hair that goes down the drain, stopping it all is nearly impossible. Commercial products are available to remove clogs from drains, but these products often contain toxic ingredients. Using baking soda to unclog shower drains is a safe, natural and environmentally friendly alternative.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

ScrewdriverBucketSmall potHot pads½ cup white vinegarDrain plug or rag

Instructions

1 Remove the drain cover from the drain. Some drain covers can be pried off with a screwdriver. Others have screws that must be loosened before the drain cover can be pulled off.

2 Stick your fingers in the drain hole and scoop out as much of the visible hair as possible.

3 Remove as much of the standing water from the shower as possible. If the drain is severely clogged, the water may just be sitting in the tub. Use a bucket to scoop out the water and dump it down the sink or toilet.

4 Fill a small pot with 3 cups of water. Place it on the stove and bring it to a boil. Use hot pads to carefully carry it to the shower.

5 Pour 1 cup baking soda down the shower drain and then slowly pour the hot water down the drain. Be careful not to let the boiling water splash your skin.

6 Wait a few minutes and run the water to see if the clog is gone.

7 Use baking soda and vinegar if the clog persists. Pour 1 cup of baking soda down the drain followed by ½ cup white vinegar.

8 Cover the drain immediately with a drain plug or stuff a rag into it so that nothing can escape. The reaction of the vinegar and baking soda will cause an eruption.

9 Allow the baking soda and vinegar to sit in the drain for at least 30 minutes. In the meantime, boil another 3 cups of water on the stove.

10 Remove the plug and slowly pour the hot water down the drain. Repeat this process, if necessary, until the hair has been pushed through the drain, releasing the clog.
