How to configure cat5 cables

Configuring cat5 (or category 5) cable is an essential step done just prior to connecting computers and networks together. Cat5 cables are comprised coloured copper wire pairs protected by PVC or FEP jackets, and they look similar---albeit somewhat larger---than a standard telephone cable. To configure a cat5 cable, measure the length of cable you need, cut the cable and terminate the ends with RJ-45 plugs.

Instructions

Terminating Cat5 Cable

1 Pull and measure the length of cat5 cable you will need. Leave a couple feet of cable slack in case you make a mistake terminating the cables and need to recut them.

2 Use a wire cutter to cut the cable to the desired length.

3 Use the wire cutter to strip away the cable jacket approximately two inches from the cable end. Separate the coloured copper wire pairs into white-green green, white-orange orange, white-blue blue and white-brown brown.

4 For a standard cat5 A connection (or 568A) separate the coloured copper wires from left to right; white-green, green, white-orange, blue, blue-white, orange, white-brown and brown. Straighten the wires and cut them by about a half an inch from the end. This will even out the ends and make it easier to push them into the RJ-45 plug. For a standard cat5 B connection (or 568B) align the coloured copper wires from left to right; white-orange, orange, white-green, blue, white-blue, green, white-brown and brown. Straighten the wires and cut them by about a half an inch from the end. This will even out the ends and make it easier to push them into the RJ-45 plug.

5 With an RJ-45 plug held bottom side up, push the coloured copper wires into the RJ-45 plug, making sure that the coloured wires remain in order. Verify that the wire ends terminate full into the RJ-45 plug. Use an RJ-45 crimping tool to crimp the RJ-45 plug. This will seal the connection.

Tips and warnings

Before cutting your cable, it may be helpful to pull the cable from the source to the target to ensure you have enough.

Do not step on the cat 5 cable or allow it to twist as this may cause damage to the thin copper wires found within the cat 5 cable jacket.
