2Wire routers, like other routers, automatically block incoming traffic. Certain programs running on computers behind the 2Wire routers require incoming traffic be forwarded to that computer so they can receive incoming connections, such as for VoIP calls. 2Wire routers don't support UPnP, which allows the program needing the traffic to automatically configure the ports on the router, so you'll have to configure the VoIP ports manually. Different VoIP programs use different ports, so you'll also need to know the ports your VoIP program requires.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Instructions

1 Click your web browser's address bar, type "http://gateway.2wire.net" and press "Enter."

2 Click "Firewall" on the router's configuration page.

3 Click "Firewall Settings."

4 Click "Add a New User-Defined Application" in the Application panel.

5 Type the VoIP program's name into the "Application Name" box.

6 Click "TCP" or "UDP," depending on which type of port your VoIP program needs. If it needs both TCP and UDP, create an additional rule for the other type of port after.

7 Type the port or port range the VoIP program requires into the "Port (or Range)" box in the format "1500" or "1500-1600." Consult your VoIP program's documentation for the ports it requires.

8 Click "Add Definition" and "Done."
