How to connect a printer with a wireless printer modem

Setting up a printer for wireless operation with a modem will make it possible for multiple computers to use the same printer, which can be installed in a convenient, central location. This will free up desk space and reduce clutter, since the printer can be placed almost anywhere, even in a closet. The connection should take only a minute, depending on the available ports on the printer. If Ethernet is available, a straight connection to the wireless modem can be made with a standard Ethernet cable. Printers with USB ports will need a USB-to-Ethernet adaptor, available at electronics and computer stores.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Ethernet cableEthernet-to-USB adaptor (depending on printer model)

Instructions

1 Turn off the printer and check the connection ports along the back panel. If the printer is equipped with an Ethernet socket, only an Ethernet cable will be needed. Use an adaptor if the printer has only a USB port.

2 Insert the plug on one end of the Ethernet cable into the printer socket until the plug locks in place with a click. If using USB, insert the USB plug on the cable adaptor into the port on the printer.

3 Connect the plug on the other end of the Ethernet cable to a free Ethernet port on the wireless modem. If using an adaptor, connect an Ethernet cable from the Ethernet jack on the adaptor to a free Ethernet port on the wireless adaptor.

4 Plug in the printer power cord and turn on the printer.

Tips and warnings

Any computer with a Wi-Fi card and access to the network can send documents to the printer through the wireless modem. Use the CD-ROM that comes with the printer to install the software on the computer.

Connect the printer to the modem before plugging the printer into the outlet.
