How to count to ten in Arabic

We get our number characters from Arabic - before we used Arabic numerals, we used Roman numerals. Unfortunately, the numbers used in Arabic are not the same as our “Arabic numerals.” The written form of the numbers are also difficult to understand because Arabic uses a different character set to Western European languages. The easiest way to learn how to pronounce the numbers is to look for a video on the Internet.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Instructions

1 Clear your mind of assumptions. Although our numbers are supposed to come from Arabic, we seem to have got them mixed up. Six looks like our seven and five looks like our zero. Remember you are looking at a foreign language and prevent yourself from looking for “false friends.”

2 Familiarise yourself with the pronunciation notation in the phonetic version of the word. You will see the number as written in Arabic as a numeral and then as written alphabetically in the Arabic character set, the phonetic version, written in Western European character set is for our benefit and is never used in Arab countries. A line over a letter means you have to stretch it out, so if you see a line over an “e” you should pronounce it as “eee” rather than like the “e” in end.” An apostrophe or a dash means you should put a slight pause at that point of the word.

3 Practice you letters with friends who come from Arabic-speaking countries. If you need to speak Arabic numbers for a holiday in Arabia, then you need to get up to speed quickly when you arrive. Try to practice in the UK first with someone who is a native of the country you intend to visit because each Arabic speaking country pronounces the numbers slightly differently.

4 Memorise the following: ٠ siffer – zero ١ wāhid - one ٢ ithāyn - two ٣ thalātha - three ٤ arba'a - four ٥ khamsa – five ٦ sitt - six ٧ sab'a - seven ٨ thamāniya - eight ٩ tis'a - nine ١٠ ashara - ten
