How to Create a Scallop Border With Embroidery

Add a delicate scalloped edge to handkerchiefs or other linens to create a timeless heirloom look. Hand stitched scallop edging can give most any linen a designer inspired look for a fraction of what the finished piece would cost retail or to have to pay someone to hand stitch it. Creating a scalloped edge is done with a few embroidery tools and some basic stitching knowledge.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

Fabric squareRulerTailor's chalkNeedleThreadSharp small scissorsEmbroidery floss

Instructions

1 Lay the fabric on a smooth, flat surface. Lay the ruler on the fabric, about an inch from the edge.

2 Make evenly spaced dots on the fabric square with the tailor's chalk. These will be the peaks of the scallop. For instance, if your fabric square is six inches along each side, you could make a scallop every inch.

3 Turn the fabric and repeat above step for each side. Connect the dots with a curved line. This is the actual scallop.

4 Thread the needle and make small running stitches about an eighth of an inch inside this line, all the way around the fabric square. Use the small scissors and cut out along the chalk line.

5 Use three strands of embroidery floss to sew the scalloped edge. Start in one corner and make a series of overcast stitches. Maintain an even tension and closely follow the round edge of the scallop. Do this all the way around the fabric square. Once you are back to where you are started, you are finished.
